The 2026 championship Series

Poet Arena runs biweekly from April to November at Richmond Tavern.

Each event crowns one winning poet. With two events each month, two poets earn Golden Tickets monthly and qualify for the Grand Championship.

At the end of the season, all Golden Ticket winners return to compete for the title of Poet Arena Champion.

How it works

  • Poets sign up in advance or on the day of the event

  • 10 poets are randomly selected to compete

  • Round 1: All 10 perform → audience selects top 5

  • Final Round: Top 5 perform again → audience selects 1 winner

Each show produces one winner.

Poets who are not selected or do not win are welcome to return and compete again at future Poet Arena events throughout the season.

MONTHLY SHOW PRIZES

Each Poet Arena show crowns one winner.

With two shows per month, two poets earn Golden Tickets each month and qualify for the Grand Championship.

  • A sponsored prize (varies each month depending on partner sponsors)

  • A featured performance slot at a future Poet Arena show

GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

At the end of the season, all Golden Ticket winners from each show return for the Poet Arena Grand Championship.

With two winners per month across the season, the finale brings together a strong lineup of top-performing poets.

The Grand Champion receives:

  • A $1,000 cash prize

  • A Grand Sponsor Prize Package

  • A featured spot on the Spoken Culture Artist Roster for future paid performances

  • The title of Poet Arena Champion

The rules are simple:

  • All styles of poetry styles are welcomed.

  • Open to poets of all levels — from first-time performers to experienced artists.

  • Original work only — all pieces must be your own

  • Time limit: 2 minutes per performance

  • Each round must feature a different poem

  • Props and costumes are allowed

  • Audience voting determines and advancement and winners

  • Poets must be present at sign-up and selection

  • 10 poets are randomly selected each show

  • Be ready to perform when called

  • Ties are resolved through a sudden death round, where tied poets perform again and the audience selects the winner.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Audience voting is guided by three core elements:

  • Performance — how the poet delivers their work, including presence, voice, and command of the stage

  • Writing — the strength of the piece itself, including originality, structure, and use of language

  • Impact — the overall effect of the performance, including emotional resonance and audience response

The goal is to recognize poets who not only write well, but also connect, move the audience, and leave a lasting impression.

Poet Arena offers opportunities for organizations and businesses to support and engage with the local arts community.

Sponsors recieve:

  • Brand visibility and advertisement at live events

  • Recognition across digital platforms

  • Opportunities to connect with a creative audience

  • Alignment with community-driven cultural initiatives
